  • Name: Leaproot
  • Aliases: Runner's Root
  • Longevity: 20 years
  • Population: Common
  • Locations: Leaproot is native to the forests of Northern Eroba.
  • Habitat: Leaproot can be found in the forest where foliage is the thickest, or at the base of trees. This is due to the plant's need to shield itself from the sun. Those that attempt to grow the plant have to keep this in mind, lest they risk losing the plant's ability to produce the desired effects.
  • Applications: When consumed, Leaproot grants the person consuming it a helpful boost of energy. Leaproot can also help restore mental awareness, making it ideal for those that have to work long days. It has also been used to treat certain pains, making it helpful for healers both on and off the battlefield. It can be consumed via tea, or by chewing on the root directly.
  • Description: Leaproot is a plant known for its healing and rejuvenating properties, becoming a staple among adventurers and soldiers across Gaia, particularly in Northern Eroba.

  • Size: Small
  • Harvestables: To gain the benefits of this plant, one would need to look to the root, as that is the part of the plant that holds the nutrients needed to experience the effect. Aside from the root, the stem and leaves can be used to add flavor to a variety of dishes, giving them a nice, herbal touch. When muddled, the flowers of the plant can be added to a drink to give it a fantastically sweet, floral flavor.
  • Colour Variation: None
  • Physical Description: At first glance, the untrained eye might mistake Leaproot for a common flowery plant, but those that know what to look for will keep an eye out for its beautiful white flowers. The smell that emits from the plant is telling as well, as the flowers have an unmistakably sweet smell.

  • Cultivation: Though Leaproot is edible to humans, fae, and animals alike, it is considered to be a tough plant to grow in large quantities. This is largely due to its aversion to sunlight, and its delicate nature when not grown under very specific circumstances. Cultivators of the plant will usually only grow a few of the plants at the time, so that they may better monitor the growth process. One has to regulate the plant's temperature, water ratio, and sunlight intake closely if they wish to successfully grow it.
  • Magical Properties: N/A

  • Light Aversion. Due to the nature of the plant, it has to almost completely be kept away from sunlight until it is harvested, otherwise it will lose its potency.
  • Temperamental. Leaproot requires much nurturing to ensure that it matures properly. If not treated with care, it will become useless before it reaches full maturity.

Medieval-annals-headers-historical-info.png

There is a legend revolving around Leaproot, though it has several variations from culture to culture. The common thread within the legend tells a tale of a young man that was a messenger for a great army. His commander had been caught in a dire situation, having been overwhelmed by an enemy force. The young man was charged with getting a message to their reinforcements before they suffered a grave defeat. The journey was long, and the young man grew tired as he pressed forward toward his objective. As his legs gave out and his feet grew numb from the running, the gods blessed him with the use of the first Leaproot plant, allowing him to sustain enough energy to get the message to his comrades in time. This legend is the reason for both the plant's name and its more commonly used nickname "Runner's Root". Whether the legend is true is another matter entirely, but it has been a tale handed down by generations wherever the plant grows.

Leaproot is found in the wild, and is not commonly cultivated outside of a few small gardens. Local healers, hedge mages, and doctors to nobility will often keep a few of the plants on hand in order to make use of its properties. There has also been the occasional cook or tavern owner that may keep some of the plant around for its more flavorful properties. Outside of these circumstances, however, one will not find Leaproot among the common fields as you may a grain or other crop. Instead, one must journey into the forests where the sun's rays are held back by the thick, dense foliage. It can be difficult to locate for those that are uninitiated, but those that know the plant will be able to find it with relative ease. However one obtains it, Leaproot will certainly serve them well when they find themselves in need of an extra boost of energy.
